Film premiere & award for the Port of Hamburg: On behalf of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) Kontrapunkt staged an emotionally engaging “Hamburg Night” on the occasion of the most significant conference of the international port community, the “IAPH World Ports Conference”, held in Los Angeles.

The communication aim of the event was to present the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg as an attractive event venue and welcoming host of the next global ports conference in 2015.

As a tribute to the host city – the capital of the film industry, Los Angeles – the Hanseatic City of Hamburg came up with a very special film premiere, starring not a Hollywood star but the Port of Hamburg – one of the very few international seaports which, located right in the city centre, is the pulsing heart of a lively metropolis.

“When it comes to deciding whether to take part in a congress or not, prospective visitors consider both the content of the event and its venue,” says Stefan Rössle, Managing Director of Kontrapunkt. “The emotional images in our film, which we had shot earlier in the Port of Hamburg, managed to enchant the guests and make them eager to come to Hamburg and attend the upcoming conference.” The film about Hamburg was not the only highlight, though.

The event location in L.A. was awesome too! Directed by Kontrapunkt, the representatives from the Hanseatic city welcomed some 500 high-ranking guests from the global port community at the Space Shuttle Pavilion of the California Science Centre in the shadow of the legendary space shuttle Endeavour.

Befittingly, one of the highlights of the gala evening was the presentation of a prize for a TV production. The managing director of the HPA, Jens Meier, received not the Golden Globe but the Port Communications Award for the HPA’s “Hafen TV” series as the best port communications project worldwide from Geraldine Knatz, the then president of the IAPH (The International Association of Ports and Harbors). A Beatles tribute band provided live music throughout the evening.

Asked the next day at the HPA’s exhibition booth designed by Kontrapunkt the guests unanimously agreed: “The evening was the highlight of this year’s conference – we so look forward to visiting Hamburg.”

Port cities take turns to host the IAPH World Ports Conference, which takes place every two years. The IAPH’s declared aim is to promote the co-operation among its members and jointly find solutions to global maritime problems. In December 2012 Kontrapunkt was awarded the contract to organise and stage the conference in Hamburg in 2015.
